How IoT Works

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects physical machines, sensors, devices, and equipment to software platforms so that data can be collected, monitored, analyzed, and acted upon in real time.

In an industrial environment, IoT typically works through five main steps:

  1. Data Collection – Sensors and machines capture parameters such as temperature, vibration, pressure, energy consumption, production count, speed, and machine status.
  2. Connectivity – Data is transferred through PLCs, IoT gateways, or industrial networks using protocols such as Modbus, OPC UA, MQTT, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, Wi-Fi, or 4G/5G.
  3. Data Processing – The IoT gateway or cloud/server platform processes and organizes the collected machine data.
  4. Monitoring & Analytics – Dashboards display real-time production, OEE, energy consumption, alarms, machine health, and other KPIs. AI/ML models can also analyze the data for predictive maintenance and anomaly detection.
  5. Alerts & Actions – When abnormal conditions are detected, the system can generate alerts through dashboards, email, SMS, mobile notifications, or trigger automated actions.
